Medical Science Liaison

 

General role description

Medical Science Liaisons help connect healthcare professionals with the latest medical and scientific information. They work for pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or medical device companies and meet with doctors, researchers, and other experts to talk about clinical data, new treatments, and research opportunities.

MSLs play a key role in helping medical products be used safely and effectively, and they provide valuable insights from the field to help guide future research and development.

Key responsibilities

  • Build and maintain relationships with doctors, researchers, and other experts in the field
  • Share up-to-date information about new therapies and clinical data
  • Support clinical trials by helping connect researchers and study sites with company teams
  • Provide education to healthcare professionals about products and scientific developments
  • Gather insights from healthcare settings and share them with internal teams to support research and product development

Workplace settings

  • Pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and medical device companies

Required qualifications

  • Most roles require a PhD, PharmD, or Master’s degree in life sciences, pharmacy, medicine, or a related field

Other notable requirements

Medical Science Liaisons often need:

  • Experience in medical affairs or relevant therapeutic area expertise is often preferred
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills
  • Ability to understand and explain complex scientific information clearly
  • Experience working with or alongside healthcare professionals
  • A willingness to travel regularly to meet with external stakeholders
