Senior Research Chemists lead and carry out complex lab work to help improve or create new products, processes, or testing methods in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or health-related industries. They use their chemistry knowledge to solve problems, support other scientists, and guide research projects. As well as running experiments, they also help develop testing methods, ensure quality standards are met, and work closely with teams from manufacturing, research, and regulation.
Key tasks and responsibilities
- Plan and run detailed lab experiments to support product development or improve manufacturing processes
- Develop and test new methods for analysing or making chemical compounds
- Guide and support junior chemists or research staff
- Make sure lab work follows safety, quality, and regulatory standards (such as Good Manufacturing Practice)
- Analyse and explain lab results to help guide product improvements or support applications to regulators
- Work with teams from different areas such as manufacturing, research, or regulatory affairs
Workplace settings
- Pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies
- Government, not-for-profit, peak body and advocacy organisations involved in research
Required qualifications
- A Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, pharmaceutical sciences, or a related field
- Postgraduate qualifications (e.g. MSc, PhD) are typically required for senior roles
Other notable requirements
Senior Research Chemists typically bring:
- Several years’ experience in lab-based roles such as analytical or formulation chemistry
- Strong understanding of safety protocols and regulatory requirements
- Ability to solve technical problems and think critically
- Confidence in reviewing data and writing scientific reports
- Experience mentoring or supervising junior team members
