Senior Data Scientist

General role description

Senior Data Scientists apply advanced analytical techniques to help solve problems and improve decision-making in healthcare, research, and medical innovation. They build predictive models, analyse large and complex datasets, and communicate insights that support clinical, research, or business goals. These roles often involve leading data projects from start to finish, mentoring junior staff, and working with other teams to ensure their models and analyses are well-designed, reliable, and help answer important clinical or research questions.

Key tasks and responsibilities

  • Build and test advanced models (e.g. machine learning or statistical models) to help solve healthcare or research problems
  • Analyse large and complex datasets to find patterns or insights that support decision-making
  • Plan and manage data tasks across a project, from identifying what’s needed to checking that the results work as expected
  • Share findings with others using clear visualisations, summaries, or presentations
  • Provide guidance to junior team members and contribute to improving how data work is done

Workplace settings

  • Healthcare settings
  • Pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical device companies
  • Contract Research Organisations (CROs)
  • Government, not-for-profit, peak body and advocacy organisations involved in research

Required qualifications

  • A degree in data science, computer science, statistics, mathematics, or a related health or biomedical discipline
  • Postgraduate training or experience in advanced analytics, machine learning, or health informatics is often desirable

Other notable requirements

Senior Data Scientists typically bring:

  • 5+ years of experience working in healthcare, medical research, or life sciences
  • Strong skills in Python and/or R, and experience using data science libraries
  • Experience working with complex data types such as clinical records, time series, or genomic data
  • Ability to manage data projects independently and work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams
  • Strong communication skills to explain complex technical ideas to a broad audience

Common next roles
