General role description

Directors of a specific function lead a defined area of clinical research or product development, such as site management, data management, regulatory affairs, or medical writing.

In CROs and pharmaceutical, biotech, or medical device companies, they are responsible for turning high-level functional goals into practical plans and processes, leading teams, and ensuring the work in their area is delivered to a high standard.

Directors usually oversee operations across a region, study portfolio, or group of programmes, and report to a Vice President or Senior Director. This role suits experienced professionals with strong technical knowledge and leadership ability.

Key responsibilities

  • Turn strategic goals into practical plans for their team and function
  • Oversee the daily operations of the functional area (e.g. monitoring sites, managing data, preparing regulatory submissions)
  • Lead and support their team, helping staff build skills and meet their targets
  • Collaborate with other departments (e.g. clinical, medical, regulatory, commercial) to ensure smooth project delivery
  • Represent their function in client, auditor, or regulatory meetings with support from senior leaders
